KAZI NAZRUL ISLAM

Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on 24 May, 1899 at Churulia in the district of Burdwan. His father was Kazi Fakir Ahmed and mother was Jaheda Khatun. He was lovingly called Dukhu Mia. Nazrul did not get a good chance for education. He read upto class X in Searsole High School. He had to struggle hard in his life. He was a boy-servant in a baker’s shop. Later, he served as a cook of a railway guard. Afterwards he joined the army as a Habildar in the Middle East. He wrote a good number of poems and thousands of songs and ‘Gazals’ and essays. He also wrote many novels, stories and dramas. His notable works are ‘Agnibina’, ‘Dolonchapa’,

Swarbahara”. “Bidrohi’, ‘Bisher Banshi’ etc. He composed more than two thousand songs. He had won many awards. He got the Jagattarini gold medal. Padma Bhushan was conferred on him.

This noted litterateur passed away on August 29, 1976 in Dhaka in Bangladesh.
